Four and a half。I’ve been feeling under the water these last few days (my current guess is a rapidly spreading brain cancer) and for the life of me I can’t remember the proper order of events in this volume, but I’m inclined to review it as properly as I can if only because I’m stuck at the office bored out of my mind and wanting to leave。We left our protagonist, a guy who got snatched from Earth into a fantasy world by a witch, who also gave him the power to go back in time whenever he dies, as Four and a half。I’ve been feeling under the water these last few days (my current guess is a rapidly spreading brain cancer) and for the life of me I can’t remember the proper order of events in this volume, but I’m inclined to review it as properly as I can if only because I’m stuck at the office bored out of my mind and wanting to leave。We left our protagonist, a guy who got snatched from Earth into a fantasy world by a witch, who also gave him the power to go back in time whenever he dies, as he had gotten out of the tomb of the dead witches where he had spoken with the Witch of Greed, of Pride, of Wrath and of Gluttony, only to find out that Jealousy had felt left out and had decided to incarnate herself and ruin everything。 As the protagonist was being dissolved by the witch’s stalker-like obsessive love, tigerman Garfield saved the protagonist。 From a vantage point both argue about the situation。 The protagonist learns that everybody he cares about in Sanctuary has been consumed by the encroaching shadow that the Witch of Jealousy spreads, and although Garfiel considers the protagonist an enemy because he smells like the witch (due to the power she gave him), it’s now a matter of stopping the incarnated witch before she ruins everything else。 Tigerman intends to stop the witch in his usual subtle manner: turning into a gigantic tiger and tearing her apart。 However, he also recruits the help of a couple dozen of clones of Ryuzu, who seem shell-like, only with the barest of intelligence to obey simple commands。 They can also self-destruct in an explosive manner for some reason, so tigerman orders them to launch a suicide attack on the witch, and when that doesn’t work, he jumps on her claws drawn。 However, the witch without much effort turns tigerman into a bloody mist。The protagonist had been standing around powerless, and with nobody to defend him, the witch embraces him with her shadow。 It’s an acid-like magical thing that slowly dissolves the souls of those it covers, merging their memories with those of the people that had been dissolved before。 He has the feeling that it won’t count as dying, so his return by death won’t trigger and he’ll be screwed。 As the shadow-like presence of the witch floats in front of him, he sees the charm given by the twelve year old servant friend, who has a crush on him, glow conspicuously; he recalls that the Witch of Greed had enchanted it for a reason。 As he manipulates the charm, it transforms into a sharp blade。 The Witch of Greed had given it as a gift so he might kill himself in a pinch。 After he plunges the knife into his own throat, he figures that he might as well unveil the face of the witch floating in front of him。 He stares at the visage of his beloved half-elf, pained by witnessing the protagonist dying。 In this volume, I don’t recall exactly when, we discover that the Witch of Jealousy, whose spirit rests in the tomb, had noticed that the protagonist was going to meet the other witches and she had wanted in as well, but whatever magical barriers the Witch of Greed had set up hadn’t allowed her to。 Still wanting to appear anyway, the Witch of Jealousy had decided to possess the suitable body lying around on the tomb: that of the heroine, who is also a white-haired half-elf。The last part is a huge deal in this story, because the Witch Cult had been attempting to reincarnate the Witch of Jealousy into the heroine’s body, but it had been a sort of given that they were crazy and it would fail, ending up with the heroine dead。 But if the Witch of Jealousy of her own accord was able to do so, the heroine’s existence is a danger。 I suspect that the Witch snatched the protagonist from Earth due to a time paradox of sorts: she loves and gave the power to the protagonist because he had saved her life and loved her, although he only met her and fell in love with her because he snatched him to the fantasy world。 The Witch of Jealousy had time powers after all。 Too much to think about in my currently muddled mental state。In any case, the protagonist dies and wakes up in the past next to the lying heroine。 As he routinely did after the previous times he died, he was going to wake her up, but his subconscious stops him when he was extending an arm towards her。 He feels for a moment that he’s going to touch the Witch of Jealousy; after all, they had the same face。 After things settle down, the protagonist uses the opportunity to speak with his Joker-like lord to clarify whether his librarian is actually a Witch Cultist; in the previous volume the protagonist had found out that the librarian had a Gospel, which as far as the protagonist knows identifies her as a Witch Cultist。 The lord, however, assures him that the book he saw is another kind of magical book (one that tells the real future), and that the librarian is in no way a Witch Cultist。 Convinced enough, the protagonist decides that to save the people at the mansion from the incoming contract killers, he’ll have to enlist the librarian’s help。As he was marching out of Sanctuary, though, tigerman Garfiel intercepts him。 Given that the protagonist smells like the witch, Garfiel doesn’t want to let him go in case he ruins some shit anywhere else。 However, in an interesting conversation the protagonist assures him that he’s there to help them and to alleviate their troubles。 Garfiel, annoyed as usual, replies that the protagonist has no clue about the pain that having been trapped for ten years in that isolated place would be like, that he has no clue about what real pain is。 The protagonist stares at him and tells him, “I know hell。 I’ve seen it many times。 I want to prevent others from seeing the same hell。 That’s why I’m here”。 Garfiel, stunned slash convinced enough, lets him go。Back at the mansion, the protagonist gathers the servants and prompts them to take shelter at the village, because the contract killers are supposed to be targeting the mansion。 There’s a sweet exchange between Frederica, the half-beast shapeshifter servant, and the protagonist, in which he opens up about the situation at Sanctuary, that he knows that she had intended for them to break the barrier so her little brother (Garfiel) could finally escape。 The main change in the protagonist is that he knows that he’s interacting with these people for the last time in this life: his mission is to extract enough new information from the librarian or even the contract killers themselves before he’s inevitably killed again。 I think this is the first time in the story so far in which the protagonist so inhumanly moved forward knowing with certainty that his current actions would lead to his likely painful death。 I don’t count the times he killed himself, because that was mostly an almost immediate escape。When he faces the reclusive librarian again, she’s her usual standoffish self until he reveals that he knows that the librarian is a spirit contracted by Echidna, the Witch of Greed。 He’s still pissed at the librarian having suggested that all the good times they had were due to her following her Gospel’s words, but when he snatches the book from her hands he realizes that the pages are blank。 The librarian had been stuck in her contract for four hundred years, with the book that was supposed to be telling her the future having failed to show her any guidance for many years。 She opens up about her major depression she had been tolerating, and that she wanted someone, a fated That Person, to either free her from her contract or just kill her (she can’t kill herself because she’s a spirit or some shit)。 Faced with the librarian’s silent tears, he wants to help her but won’t bring himself to kill her, and he’s not sure he can bear getting tangled in a contract with a spirit, given that it’d bind his entire life to hers。 As he was hesitating, though, contract killer Elsa Granhiert finds the library。 Turns out that she had been contracted to assault the mansion whenever the protagonist specifically appeared。 Faced with this almost unstoppable assassin, the protagonist is about to damage his magic-producing “organ” to throw a smoke bomb spell, but the librarian does before he can finish speaking。 She has the same rare type of magic affinity as the protagonist, which must be part of why they get along well。As they escape, with the protagonist carrying the small librarian in his arms, he intends to reach the village in case there’s something they can do to save the villagers and the two servants。 However, the plume of smoke raising in the distance suggests they are far too late。 They get intercepted by the other assassin, a beast master who caused the trouble back in volume three。 She is a child or a tween who was actually one of the younglings they had to save back during the demon dog incident; this bitch was pretending to be some innocent little girl。 I don’t feel good about someone obviously villainous being so young, unless it’s one of those young looking people who are actually like hundreds of years old as it tends to be strangely common in Japanese fiction。 In any case, before they can deal with this mini demon, the main assassin Elsa sandwiches them from behind。 The librarian shows her offensive magic。 She sounded quite adorably badass with her verbal tics while confronting the overpowered killer (“now fall where you stand, I suppose”), and although Elsa shatters into bits, it only lured the protagonist and the librarian into a sense of security。 Somehow Elsa recovered from having been crystallized into pieces, and she stabbed the librarian from behind。 The librarian realizes that she’s finally going to die like she had wanted for so long, which relieves her。 As she dissolves slowly into light, the assassins focus on the protagonist。 Elsa gouges out one of the protagonist’s eyes, but when she was going to plunge into his bowels, the dying librarian teleports him through a spell。The protagonist appears back in Sanctuary。 It’s snowing as it had during the run where a horde of rabbits had devoured him, but this time the weather change happened too soon。 He finds his beloved heroine holed up in the tomb as she’s trying and failing to pass the tests。 She clings to the protagonist as if he were her only lifeguard, and corresponds his love in a disturbingly needy way that doesn’t suit her。 When the protagonist, weirded out, stumbles outside, Garfiel confronts him; Garfiel believes that the heroine is producing this weather (she’s an ice-based spirit mage), but the protagonist knows that she wouldn’t do so or be able to in her state。 The protagonist states that the heroine, in her right mind, would have never asserted love for him in such a way, and that this whole thing must be a scheme by scheme master himself, the clownish lord Roswaal。They confront the wounded man。 He hints again at the possibility that he knows that the protagonist can return back in time, and when Garfiel gets too intrusive with his anger, Roswaal not only punches him through, but also sandwiches his devoted servant Ram in between, destroying her heart。 As they both lie dead in front of the protagonist, he demands to know, stunned, why Roswaal would have done such a thing。 It was a ploy for both to have their final conversation in a reality that Roswaal knows is doomed。 He reveals he knows that the protagonist can travel in time, and that he had failed in this run as he had in many others。 The protagonist believes that Roswaal must somehow retain memories of the protagonist’s previous runs, but the lord says that it’s not the case: although his current consciousness will die now and forever, that’s alright with him as long as the protagonist helps some version of the lord achieve whatever final objective he’s after。 The protagonist is bewildered at this man who no longer thinks like a human being。 The horde of the Great Rabbit approaches, and Roswaal allows himself to be devoured。 Although the protagonist knows that everybody in Sanctuary is doomed, he still struggles towards the tomb where a deranged heroine is still trying to pass the trials, or at least believing so。 As he rests his head on her lap, mortally wounded from the numerous bites he’s received along the way, the heroine doesn’t even notice he’s expiring as she plants a kiss on his lips。I first saw this sequence in the anime adaptation, where they passed the heroine’s state as some sort of possession。 However, this original novel version presents it as a regular mental breakdown: her literal guardian spirit, Puck, has been missing from the beginning of this arc; she’s the only one tasked to pass a psychological gauntlet that she can’t succeed at because it involves overcoming her past, which is too traumatic; her lord has manipulated the weather to isolate her even further from everybody else, making them feel she’s too dangerous to handle; the protagonist can’t help her as he had in the previous runs。 She’s depicted as having lost it and having resorted to clinging to the only person who remains on her side, but I don’t buy that she has ventured so far into insanity that she can’t even realize that the protagonist has lost an eye and is dying。 A great moment nonetheless; the protagonist knows this reality is done for, that when he finally dies the Great Rabbit horde is going to storm the tomb and tear the heroine apart, but all he can do at this point is to just rest on the heroine’s lap as he draws his last breath。[continues on the comments] 。。。more

4。5/5 This was probably one of the best volumes in the entire series so far。 You know, I’ve been reading Re:Zero for many years now and it still amazes me how the author has the ability to make me sob like a child through entire chapters。 Truth is, I’ve known these characters for so long, that when I see them at their lowest, it gets me。 It hurts because I’ve seen them try their best, and despite what many believe, sometimes I totally get their way of thinking。 In this volume, Subaru knows the t 4。5/5 This was probably one of the best volumes in the entire series so far。 You know, I’ve been reading Re:Zero for many years now and it still amazes me how the author has the ability to make me sob like a child through entire chapters。 Truth is, I’ve known these characters for so long, that when I see them at their lowest, it gets me。 It hurts because I’ve seen them try their best, and despite what many believe, sometimes I totally get their way of thinking。 In this volume, Subaru knows the truth about Betty and how she’s been waiting for someone to release her from her pact。 She’s been alone in that library of forbidden books for the past 400 years and I could never imagine what that feels like。 My heart truly aches for her。 On the other hand, we get to see how life would have been for the people that remain after Subaru’s gone。 Meaning that we see how Emilia, Ram, Wilhelm, Felix, even Julius and Betty mourn for Subaru –those scenes really put my heart into a blender。 Emilia is the one that gets affected the most by his loss and seeing her go mad felt like multiple daggers stabbing my chest。 I love both of them and the first kiss they share is absolutely heartbreaking。Aside from that, we learn that Roswaal knows about Subaru and his loops, though he’s not aware that the trigger is death itself。 Also, Ryuzu’s existence was nothing but Echidna’s experiment to become immortal。 Therefore, we must acknowledge that at the end of the day, Echidna is still a witch, and even if she wants “to help” Subaru, she’s only doing it for her own sake。 Thus, he should not trust her entirely。 Last but not least, we get introduced to Carmilla (the witch of Lust), Sekhmet (the witch of Sloth), and Satella (the witch of Jealousy/envy), who happens to look and talk exactly like a crazy version of Emilia。 Does this mean she’s an alter ego? A clone? Perhaps even a homunculus? We still have a lot of questions unanswered, so I’ll read the next novel as soon as I can。Side note: if you're watching the anime (Season 2), you HAVE to read the light novels 'cause they're chopping a lot of important information in the adaptation。PREVIOUS REVIEWS:Volume 1 | Volume 2 | Volume 3 | Volume 4 | Volume 5 | Volume 6 | Volume 7 | Volume 8 | Volume 9 | Volume 10 | Volume 11 。。。more

Loved it。Wow。。 This volume has exceeded my expectations。 Subaru seriously been ravaged mercilessly (more than usual) this time around。I loved the amount of thought that's been considered to construct the mentality and view points of the witches。 Truely beyond human rralm。 Loved it。Wow。。 This volume has exceeded my expectations。 Subaru seriously been ravaged mercilessly (more than usual) this time around。I loved the amount of thought that's been considered to construct the mentality and view points of the witches。 Truely beyond human rralm。 。。。more

After watching and reading the novel and the tv series adaption。 I got to say, Re: zero has got to be my best read novel of all time。 Without a doubt, this novel has stolen the special spot I've placed Evangelion on。 In this novel and the rest of them introduces a cast of characters that blew my mind away, although it wasn't something I've never seen before, but the way the story makes them interact with each other just blows my mind。 This is my biased review on the current state of Re:zero 2020 After watching and reading the novel and the tv series adaption。 I got to say, Re: zero has got to be my best read novel of all time。 Without a doubt, this novel has stolen the special spot I've placed Evangelion on。 In this novel and the rest of them introduces a cast of characters that blew my mind away, although it wasn't something I've never seen before, but the way the story makes them interact with each other just blows my mind。 This is my biased review on the current state of Re:zero 2020。 。。。more

Crazy good, continued growth of characters and learning more and more key points to the story (along with more questions, of course)

With only the highest respect intended, I have to wonder if Nagatsuki-san simply has no ideas on how to clear Subaru from this loop。 This particular loop feels endless, with zero signs of any progress being made in any direction - to the point that even Subaru dismisses his chances, interacting with complete knowledge that he's failed before anything negative occurs! It's extremely difficult to want to cheer on and pull for a character - in particular the main character - when they've given up themselves, and getting through the book was an agony。 The introduction of the second trial and the theory proposed was interesting, but it ultimately led nowhere and accomplished nothing, leaving me wondering at the point。 The only clarification this volume brought was Echidna's character, and, to be honest, any reader could have deduced the motivations behind her actions from their reading prior to her lengthy speech (which, unknown whether this was another in the usual slough of editing problems or an error on Nagatsuki-san's part, was in desperate need of paragraph breaks)。 This concept and story hold so much promise, but the current arc is slagging, and I honestly don't know if I want to continue reading when anymore when faced with this endless circling of the drain。 。。。more

This is the best volume in the Re Zero series so far。 It was absolutely bonkers and unbelievably relentless。 If you’re even just a little invested, it will rip your heart out and leave you in a daze。 Ridiculous
